Bohemian Scene : Second Chance Prom by Dominik Young
Prom is a memorable night for those who got to go. In some cases, it is seen as an event that defines the rest of one’s life. There are some people who have regrets about prom for whatever reason : perhaps they didn’t (or couldn’t go), had no date, got kicked out, or it wasn’t memorable enough. Well, one band is looking to remedy those regrets with a very special event. Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for the Second Chance Prom presented by Rewind Party Band on Saturday, April 27! As the band is getting ready to play a gig at Salty Dog Sports Bar and Grill, Bohemia sat down with band spokesperson Jessica Gomez Seniceros to discuss sponsors, prom tickets, memorable prom moments, and even prom tips.
What led to the creation of this particular event?
Just an idea that Sotero had along with Dustin Drew (formerly of 92.9) a year or so ago. And since 92.9 switched to country, Sotero went ahead with the idea & decided to do it this year.
Based on what you said this is your 1st time doing the “Second Chance Prom”? And how are people responding to this event?
Yes, first time. If it is a success, we (Rewind Party Band) will host one every year. Right now, it’s just a one-time thing to see how it goes. A trial run. People are responding pretty positive to this event. A lot of good feedback. Many are looking forward to it simply because they didn’t attend their prom, had bad experiences with their prom, or they did have a good time and would like to relive that moment. It’s crazy because people think that prom means having a date but this one we got so many friends who are just coming as they are just to have a good time. They’re like “I had a date back then but this one I’m not. So, I’m gonna have more fun just by being by myself.” There’s different scenarios on why they’re going, but that’s why we tell them that they don’t need a date. Your night. Make it for you.
Bohemian Scene : Zombie Costume Party! by Dominik Young
Since the beginning of this year, people are having a renewed interest with the end of the world. According to the Mayans, the world is supposed to end this weekend on December 21. There’s many theories on how the apocalypse will happen, but some people are looking forward to the zombie apocalypse. With the report of the “Miami zombie attack” during the summertime, zombie lovers & survivalists are waiting in anticipation. In fact, an estimated 6,000 Facebook users accepted invites to the zombie apocalypse. One establishment C & R Sports Bar along with Big Top Productions will be celebrating the zombie apocalypse with “THE ROCKING DEAD “ , a costume party happening this Saturday, December 22 featuring Tank 17 and Dr. Shame’s Love Circus. Tank 17 explains to Bohemia how this might be the BIGGEST party ever if we survive the end times.
Lindsey Stirling : Moon Trance by Dominik Young
Again trick or treat my fellow Bohemians! Since it’s premiere on December 2, 1983, Michael Jackson’s Thriller has cemented itself into pop culture. There’s been nods from other musicians (Gorillaz & pop princess Britney Spears to name a few), flash mobs, and viral videos. But one question remain : Who would dare create a music video that can be an equal or a rival to the John Landis-directed video?

Johnny's Body: From Punk Rockers To Indie Outlaws by Dominik Young
Waco, TX. Bohemia. Story by Dominik Young. Pictures by Steven Ruud with Balance Imaging.
More pictures below.
One of the most well-known and beloved acts in the Waco music scene is Johnny’s Body. Hailing from Gatesville, TX, these indie outlaws have been blazing a trail with their non-traditional take on traditional music. The current lineup includes: Jordan Rhudy (lead vocals/guitar), Taylor Branch (guitar/vocals), Carrie Burt (keyboard/vocals/ tambourine), Steven Calvillo (drums), & Jeremy Tillery (bass). The band spoke with Bohemia about their journey, the 71’s, the new album, and of course Lone Star Beer, among other things.
Sounds of Bohemia : October 2012 by Dominik Young
Trick or treat fellow Bohemians! Last year, I didn’t even put up a Sounds of Bohemia post due to being caught up with the Halloween festivities. And to make it up, please allow your friendly neighborhood Dom to present you with a BIGGER, BETTER playlist with a MUCH IMPROVED format. This new format should make it much easier for you to have a enjoyable listening experience. Also, I’ll still be posting up flyers for local music events and artists. Feel free to provide some feedback. One more thing…have a SAFE and fun Halloween!!! Now, let’s listen to some HOT October jams after the jump.
Bohemian Scene : TRUELOVE'S LAST SHOW by Dominik Young
Since opening its doors in Spring 2011, TRUELOVE Bar has evolved from the little rock bar that could into one of Waco’s premier hotspots. The bar brought something that the 254 area needed — diversity. It has become another home to the city’s much beloved bands and even some out of town acts. TRUELOVE Bar has been mentioned numerous times by Bohemia’s very own talented bloggers. On Saturday, October 27, the bar will be having one LAST show at its old address. And it seems only fitting that indie outlaws Johnny’s Body & shanty zombie indie rockers Married With Sea Monsters will be rocking the stage this Halloween weekend! Eric Mitchell, owner of TRUELOVE Bar talks more about this much anticipated concert along with the bar’s beginning and future.
Bohemia Fear Fest : Zed Edition by Dominik Young
Are you excited about the premiere of The Walking Dead Season 3? I know I am fellow Bohemians! Can’t wait to see Michonne, The Governor, & the drama surrounding the infamous Merle’s return. And to honor the new season, this year’s Bohemia Fear Fest will focus on zombies. Each of these short films take zombie fiction into completely new directions. Perhaps they’ll also keep you sated until The Walking Dead premieres this Sunday, Oct. 14.

Hello, my fellow Bohemians! It’s been quite a long time since I posted a film here. Three weeks ago, I stumbled upon a feature-length version of my favorite web series Drawn By Pain. For those who don’t know what DBP is, here’s the synopsis :
“Drawn by Pain is the Webby Award-winning, mixed live-action/animated series chronicling a woman battling the demons in her mind and in the real world as her animated madness fights for her sanity.”
The film just like the original series appealed to me in so many different ways.
Sounds of Bohemia : Mashup Edition by Dominik Young
So, I was watching a episode of my current online obsession the Idea Channel, a PBS show that examines the connection between pop-culture, technology, and art. The topic was about how mashups might be ending music genres as a whole. It pretty much touched on the same reasons why I’m a fan of mashups in general. They break musical boundaries and are indicative of the current state in music where listeners have cross-genre tastes. This episode led me to create a VERY special Sounds of Bohemia that focuses only on mashups. Some of these mashups are old, while others are more recent. Regardless, you’ll have a better appreciation for the mashup by the end of this post.

Salutations my fellow Bohemians! August is upon us, & in a couple of weeks it will be Fall semester. But don’t frown, it doesn’t mean your summer jammin’ has got to end. The Amazing (Japanese) Spider-Man By Dominik Young
We’re celebrating the release of The Amazing Spider-Man film by showing another incarnation of everyone’s favorite webslinger — the Japanese Spider-Man or ” Supaidaman” .
This classic tokusatsu was the result of a licensing agreement between MARVEL & TOEI (the makers of Super Sentai & Kamen Rider) in which both companies were allowed to use each other’s properties in any way they wanted.
If you thought Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man was different from Tobey Maguire’s, then think again. Just check out the official synopsis along with the accompanying trailer:
Bohemian Scene : Acoustic Caravan By Dominik Young
The Fourth of July weekend is right around the corner. And with the surprisingly falling gas prices, you have some people willing to travel. There are others who plan to stay home, fire up the grill, & maybe go swimming. This weekend is also perfect for the nightlife scene. There are many entertainment venues out there that are planning parties, concerts, and other events. Among these events is the “Acoustic Caravan”, a traveling music show in which you can see your favorite local bands unplugged at three different venues. One of the tour organizers, Shane Howard, provided some more details about this acoustic extravaganza.

An Interesting Tidbit About St. Patrick's Day by Dominik Young
DISCLAIMER : CLICK ALL PICTURES FOR MORE INFORMATION
Did you know that blue was the original color for St. Patrick’s Day? Well, me neither. At first, it was associated with Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Then, eventually green became associated with the holiday due to the greenness of the Irish landscape & the missionary’s usage of the three leaf clover to explain the Trinity (which later turn into a symbol of Irish Catholic nationalism). So, wearing green became a tradition on St. Patrick’s Day and later a political statement after the United Irish Uprising of 1798. And here in the U.S. , the color green is a way for some Americans to identify with their Irish roots. It’s really interesting the little things you’ll find about your favorite holidays.

In Celebration of Buffy : The Vampire Slayer by Dominik Young
Today is a very special day : it’s the 15th anniversary of Buffy : The Vampire Slayer! On March 10, 1997, the show premiered on a little known network called the WB. It allowed creator Joss Whedon to revisit/expand on the concept he created in the 1992 film. The series is a postmodern take on the horror genre (more specifically “the final girl” trope) & a action-packed tale of female empowerment. While on air, Buffy : The Vampire Slayer received critical acclaim for it’s clever writing, character development, & slang known as “Buffy Speak”. As a result, it has been influential in television thus cementing itself in pop-culture history. The series is still going strong through comics in the canonical Buffy Seasons 8 & 9. To celebrate the cult TV hit, we here at Bohemia would like to present a gallery of Buffy fanart.
Dream Giver by Dominik Young
Hello my fellow Bohemians! I know it’s been quite awhile for me to post an animated short. And I’ve FINALLY found one! To coincide with the upcoming issue & its theme of “Dreams”, I’ve found this whimsical take on the Sandman mythos called “Dream Giver”. It centers on a magical being who must rescue a young boy from his own nightmare. The film is written, produced, & directed by Tyler Carter & is animated by 46 classmates from the Brigham Young University’s Center for Animation. Through its perfect fusion of 2D & 3D animation, the film has impressed many industry professionals. As a result, the students received a Student Emmy last year. I hope that you enjoy this STUNNINGLY ANIMATED story. SWEET DREAMS!
Sounds of Bohemia : February by Dominik Young
Happy belated Valentine’s my fellow Bohemians! I know most of you enjoyed Cupid Day with your significant others. However, there are some who feel a bit jaded. Well, for the latter I dedicate this month’s S.O.B. (it’s not what you think) for those lonely Bohemians. Just think of this as a Valentine’s gift (albeit late) from the bottom of my heart. MUCH LOVE! <3
- Krewella – Killin’ It
- Chromatics – LADY
- Garçon Garçon – Hollywood Song (feat. Cazwell) (PREVIEW ; Click link for FULL version)
- Kendrick Lamar – Cartoon & Cereal
- SHOW YOU SUCK – ALL LOC EVERYTHING (PROD. BY FLOSSTRADAMUS)
- Usher – Climax (prod. Diplo)
- Solar Bears – Alpha People (ft. Sarah P. of Keep Shelley in Athens)
- Gemini Club – By Surprise
- Disco Fries ft. Niles Mason – Born To Fly
- BONUS : In case you missed it, YouTube sensation Karmin performed on Saturday Night Live this past Saturday, February 11. Instead of performing the cover songs that made them a viral hit, the swag pop duo opted for their original songs. The first song “Brokenhearted” produced by Dr. Luke invokes the same fun, poppy spirit as previously produced ”Last Friday Night” & “Domino”. With the second song “I Told You So” , it seems the band’s cover of “Look At Me Now” has influenced Amy Heidemann’s flow. Your mileage may vary on Amy’s outfits & stage presence, but you can’t deny Karmin’s MASSIVE potential to blow up the pop music scene.

Bohemian Scene : Lorri Rebholz Fights Like a Girl: A Fundraiser to Fight Cancer! by Dominik Young
On February 19, there will be a VERY special event coming up. This time it’s for someone who was involved with Bohemia in the beginning—Amanda Rebholz. For all you Curious Georges out there, Amanda is Waco’s resident Scream Queen who moonlights as a freelance columnist. Some of her short horror stories have been featured in Bohemia’s earlier issues which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you to read.
The upcoming event is for Amanda’s mother, Lorri Rebholz whose been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Lorri is truly one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Back in 2010, I had the honor of getting to hang out with her while watching Hurray for the Riff Raff & Sam Doores & the Tumbleweeds at Beatnix Burger Barn. A person as genuine as Lorri should never have such unfortunate things happen to them, but despite all that she’s keeping her head up.
In addition, she’s planning to have a good time too at a fundraiser in her honor. It’s called “Lorri Rebholz Fights Like a Girl: A Fundraiser to Fight Cancer!” There will be film screenings, silent auctions, & raffles. ALL proceeds will go to help offset her medical bills and cost of living.
So, if you can make it, PLEASE come out & support a wonderful cause for a equally wonderful lady. You can make a donation & buy a t-shirt if you can’t make the event.
Venue: Texas Theatre, 231 West Jefferson Boulevard, Dallas, TX 75208
Cost: $10 Admission
Time: 3 p.m. – 7 p.m
Sounds of Bohemia : January by Dominik Young
Hello my fellow Bohemians! I know many of you have been anxiously awaiting for some new music. And I do know it’s a tad bit—well, moreso last day of the month late. For a bit, yours truly was unsure if Sounds of Bohemia was gonna survive with the looming threat of internet censorship. So, I was caught up with that whole fiasco among other things (life, family, etc.). Once the threat was over (at the moment), I restarted my online quest for hottest new music around. And you know it had to be quality. Well, here they are .
- Heems (of Das Racist) – You Have to Ride the Wave (feat. Danny Brown, Mr. Muthaf**kin eXquire)
- Justice – On’n'On (Ruined By Rick Rubin)
- Nero – Must Be The Feeling (Delta Heavy Remix)
- WhoMadeWho – Inside World ( Music video rated BH-13 (PG-13 or TV-14) ; not suitable for Bohemians under 13.)
- e-dubble – Grey Skies (Prod. by Villain)
- Ben Browning (of Cut Copy) – I Can’t Stay
- BONUS : There is one song in particular that yours truly have been song-binging like CRAZY. It’s called “Baby’s on Fire” by South African rap-rave crew Die Antwoord (Afrikaans for “The Answer”). The first 14 seconds of this MASSIVE banger will get you hooked instantly. From that point, you’ll be transported to the BIGGEST rave….in your living room or mind. THIS IS ONE PARTY YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS!

The 254 not only has a growing indie rock scene, it also has a equally growing hip-hop scene as well. In recent years, there have been many Waco rappers who have been on their grind. As a way of showcasing their talents, A-RayTV in collaboration with NuTastic Designz created The Official Waco/Central Texas Cypher. Inspired by the BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher, this cypher features many of Waco’s best & brightest rappers such as Duce D, Kam KT, DQ Hampton, former Lady Bear Jhasmin Player, & Quistar Go.
CYPHER I

For those aspiring rappers interested in being featured in the next cypher, e-mail austin@a-raytv.net & you’ll be informed on how to participate. But there’s only one rule: YOU CAN’T BE WHACK!
Bohemia Fear Fest : Friday the 13th Edition by Dominik Young
Bohemia Fear Fest?!!! Wait a minute, it’s not Halloween yet! I know I know my fellow Bohemians. However, it’s Friday the 13th which is synonymous with horror thanks to a certain hockey-mask wearing slasher. And to celebrate this unluckiest of days on the calender, I present a new crop of horror-oriented short films.
DISCLAIMER: The following films are rated BH-13 (PG-13 or TV-14) for mild dialogue, scary situations, and horror violence. Not appropriate for Bohemians under 13.
- “Cabine of the Dead” by Vincent Templement : In this French film, a man’s only salvation from a zombie horde is a phone booth. Think “Phone Booth” by way of “Shaun of the Dead”.
- “The Last Thursday” by Rob Ward & Rodrigo Melgarejo : An overwhelmed art curator is in for a surprise when a serial killer crashes her art exhibition.
- “The Masque of The Red Death” by Mat Tyler Van Rhoon : Based on the Edgar Allen Poe short story, this film tells a grisly tale about the inevitability of death.
Dom's Urban Cover Song Challenge : Motivation by Dominik Young
If it’s one thing I’m a HUGE fan of , it’s hip-hop/R&B cover songs especially when they’re done by non-urban artists. Notable examples include Nina Gordon, Lykke Li, & more recently Karmin. I have seen my musician friends perform covers of Johnny Cash, Lady Gaga, & Australian band Jet, but I have longed for the moment when they attempt to cover a hip-hop/R & B song. That is the reason why on this very day, I’m issuing an Urban Cover Song Challenge.
And the 1st song I would LOVE to see covered is “Motivation” by Kelly Rowland ft. Lil Wayne (CLICK PICTURE TO WATCH MUSIC VIDEO).
This sultry 2011 R&B hit is what help bring former Destiny Child’s member Kelly Rowland back to the mainstream. The song was a rising success eventually charting at #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart on May 23, 2011. It has garnered Rowland an award for Song of the Year at the 2011 Soul Train Awards & a Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 54th Grammy Awards premiering on February 12, 2012.
For an non-urban band to successfully cover this song, you’ll need a strong female voice. One that can cover Rowland’s vocal range. Now, the fun part comes when covering Lil Wayne’s verse. You can either get a local rapper (CAN’T BE WHACK!) to do their own verse or just simply do Lil Wayne’s. However, if the band don’t know any rappers, they can get one of the members preferably male to perform the verse.
The challenge has been laid out. Maybe next time when I go see my musician friends, I’ll hear this song. Until next time….PEACE!

Lindsey Stirling : No Ordinary Violinist by Dominik Young
It appears that Miri-Ben Ari isn’t the only one known as ” The Hip-Hop Violinist”. There’s a new girl on the scene & her name is Lindsey Stirling! Armed with a punk-rock look, a charming smile, and some wicked dance moves, this violinist has cause quite a stir in the later half of 2010 & throughout this year.
I was introduced to the violining dynamo when Bohemia editor & good friend Amanda Hixson posted this video on Facebook. As expected, yours truly started watching more vids on YouTube along with the occasional Googling. I was SO enamored by her that I even tweeted this : “ #JustSoYouKnow THIS VIOLINIST GOT SWAG! Check out @LindseyStirling : bit.ly/acKHow . Me thinks I got a crush. Thanks @verymandy ! “
Stirling established her career when she won the title of Arizona’s Jr. Miss in 2005. It was her “recent adventures” in the fifth season of America’s Got Talent that made her into a household name. After that, she took her unique style of playing to the interwebs & hasn’t look back since.
Lindsey Stirling has expressed an interest in touring around the country. “There’s nothing more that I would love to do than to come play for you.” And this is why a few good Bohemians are planning to build a fanbase for Stirling & petition her to come perform in Waco!
Oh & before I go, I just wanted to wish everyone a FUN & SAFE New Year’s. I also have YET another video to get you in that party-rockin’ mood for New Year’s weekend. Compliments of Stirling.
