As we drove out of the driveway, giant grasshoppers flew out in graceful swoops from brittle grass made golden by the sun. If it weren’t for my heavy heart today, I’d have dreamed of overalls, and farmers’ tans, and children too happy to be afraid of yesterdays and too innocent to know of tomorrow.
