Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with Ryan Castillo and Cameron Jones, two members of Waco Texas’s very talented, home-grown hip-hop group Fly Sekrataries; the third member, Jacob Woolsey, was unable to join us.
Ryan and Cameron grew up in Waco, TX and joked that although Jacob is from Wichita Falls he is “probably more Waco than anyone they know.” The Fly Seks officially formed about a year ago but have been making music together for the better part of two years. Cameron, who has been flowing since he was in the seventh grade said Jacob introduced him to everything hip hop and they got to know Ryan while going through a “wanderer’s phase” staying in a house he dubbed a “haven for hip-hop.” Cameron and Ryan actually freestyled with each other the first night they met! Despite the hectic, loud atmosphere they were in, both seemed to know instantly their styles meshed well and spent the next few months freestyling together every single day. Ryan started writing at fifteen but didn’t become as immersed in hip hop til Cameron began encouraging him to pursue it. A major musical factor in both of their lives is, as stated by Ryan, “one of the most known/unknown people besides Bjork, Doom” and the two were also extremely influenced by what was going on in the local music scene around that same time, the early-to-mid 2000′s, mentioning nights when the Jubilee Theatre had ska/punk shows for bands like Tastydactyls and American Sasquatch; now they find inspiration in the different musical styles of the bands Why? and Look Mexico, just to name a few. However, as Ryan explained, Fly Seks tries to pay homage to the groove of old-school hip hop while also remaining within their own unique, funky, fresh style because music is constantly changing and they are continually growing as individuals. Now they are excited to watch the way the Waco music scene is growing and changing and very excited to be a part of it!
