Round about tenth grade, I had a crush — no, a BIG crush — on a red-haired beauty I knew from 1st to 8th grade. It was one of my first dates, so something special was absolutely necessary. A trip to Philly’s Chinatown would make a spectacular date. I had never eaten Chinese food, so I picked The Lotus Inn from the phone book, and made a reservation. I bet they still laugh about that one!
The menu prompted me to say, “Wow it all looks so good. I am glad they printed the menu in English, too, because my Chinese is a little rusty.” Needless to say, I knew not a single word in any language besides my own native tongue. I ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan. To this day, I always order that dish on my first visit to a new Chinese eatery.
During my first years in Waco, I tried many Chinese restaurants, and my favorite became – and remains to this day – Cathay House. We eat at this fine restaurant at least once a week. Over the last ten years or so, I have tried almost every dish on their menu, and I have never had a bad meal. Their soups are hot and delicious, and the egg rolls are crispy and fresh. Cathay House mixes its own brand of hot mustard, and it is a sinus-cleaner par excellance. The portions are great – even at lunch time, and the food always comes from the kitchen hot and fresh. Lately, curry has been my spice of choice, and their chicken curry is the best I have tasted anywhere. They have an excellent Sunday brunch Buffet as well. The only place for improvement possible would be if they began a delivery service.
